5 wounded in mass shooting on Chicago's Lower West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Five people were wounded, one of them critically, after a mass shooting in the Little Village neighborhood early Sunday.

The shooting happened just after 3:38 a.m. in the 3500 block of West 30th Street, off St. Louis Avenue.

By the late afternoon, the crime scene tape had come down. But police remained at this intersection hours after those five people were shot – collecting evidence and talking with residents.

Some of those residents said they are now worried about the threat of more violence.

Chicago Police were initially called for a person shot. They later found out there had been multiple people struck by gunfire outside an apartment building.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a 30-year-old man quarreling with an unidentified male offender who pulled out a gun and shot at the victim before fleeing the scene in a white van, police said.

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in good condition with multiple gunshot wounds to the leg.

The additional victims were in the immediate surrounding area when they were struck by gunfire, according to police.  

A 22-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the thigh and was taken to Stroger in good condition. A 48-year-old woman was shot in the leg and was also taken to Stroger in good condition.

A 53-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the legs and was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. A 30-year-old woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition.

Sources said they don't believe the original quarrel was gang related, but some of the victims may have gang affiliation.

CBS 2 called the phone number painted on the side of the apartment building outside which the shooting happened. to try to talk to the owners. CBS 2 left a message, which as of late Sunday had not been returned.

Late Sunday, police said no one was in custody. Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
