Worker Burned In Newburyport Construction Accident

NEWBURYPORT (CBS) -- One worker received moderate to severe facial burns when a trench he was working in became engulfed in flames, fire officials said Tuesday.

That sub-contractor and a National Grid worker were digging near gas lines in the trench on High Street and Park Street when the accident occurred in the afternoon, officials said.

The National Grid worker, who suffered minor facial injuries, pulled the sub-contractor out of the trench. Both were taken to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there was welding going on, officials said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, according to officials.
