Victorino Set To Begin Rehab Assignment This Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) -- Shane Victorino is expected to start a minor league rehab assignment over the weekend, with the Red Sox hoping the outfielder can make his season debut sometime next week.

Victorino will work out with the Red Sox on Friday before likely joining the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday, manager John Farrell told reporters Thursday in Chicago. The hope is that Victorino will play Saturday, Monday and Tuesday (the PawSox are off Sunday for Easter) and then be re-evaluated.

If all goes well, Victorino could be activated from the disabled list during Boston's three-game set with the New York Yankees next week at Fenway.

Victorino started the season on the disabled list after injuring his hamstring in the team's final game of spring training.

The Red Sox did not receive as good of news on third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who was sent back to Boston from Chicago with the flu. That has delayed his rehab from a calf strain, and no timetable has been set for a potential rehab assignment.
