Red Sox Activate Blake Swihart, Designate Sandy Leon

BOSTON (CBS) -- Rookie Blake Swihart is back on the Red Sox roster.

Swihart, who missed the last 12 games with a sprained left foot, was activated from the disabled list on Monday. To make room for the backstop on the roster, fellow catcher Sandy Leon was designated for assignment.

In 40 games this season, the 23-year-old Swihart is batting .241 with 11 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He started the season in Pawtucket and was expected to spend at least most of the season in Triple-A, but was called up in early May when veteran backstop Ryan Hanigan was placed on the disabled list with a hand injury.

Swihart was starting to heat up at the plate just before getting hurt, collecting eight hits and driving in three runs in 18 at-bats in the five games prior to his injury.

Boston traded for Leon at the end of spring training after Christian Vasquez was lost for the season to Tommy John surgery. As the personal catcher for Clay Buchholz, Leon hit .180 in 33 games this season, serving mostly as the personal catcher for Clay Buchholz.
