Pedestrian Struck And Killed On Route 1

SAUGUS (CBS) -- A 69-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed while walking along Route 1 Wednesday night, authorities say.

Massachusetts State Police said Loretta Williamson had been walking with a companion near the Red Roof Inn where they were believed to be staying. The crash happened shortly before 11 p.m. and closed two lanes of traffic.

Williamson was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The companion was not struck.

Shortly after the crash, a 20-year-old Saugus woman driving a 2005 Nissan Altima called police to say she may have hit someone while driving north on Route 1. Police said she's not being charged at this time, but they are investigating to see if the crash could've been avoided.

The names of the victim and driver have not yet been released.
