On National Adoption Day, A Family Celebrates

BROCKTON (CBS) -- At the Brockton courthouse Friday, nine-year-old Hannah and her six-year-old brother Xavier were formally adopted into the family they've been calling their own for the past three years.

Hannah said she was "excited, but nervous."

The children were attending an event for National Adoption Day, created to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children waiting in foster care to find families. Today in Massachusetts, 120 children are being adopted out of foster care.

Heather and Ryan Cody, their new parents, finalized their adoption Friday. The Codys also have a five-year-old and twin three-year-olds, and while their busy house might sound overwhelming, Ryan says it's great.

"When we get to come home, there's louder laughs, there's a lot more smiles and stronger hugs to go around," Ryan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "Our biological kids have seen them since day one as brother and sister."

Heather Cody said families thinking about adopting shouldn't overthink it.

"I think if we can do it, anyone can do it," said Heather. "We're not perfect parents or anything like that. We're just doing our best, and we just wanted to give them a good home ... it's busy, but it's a lot of fun."

The Codys said they're celebrating Hannah and Xavier's finalized adoption with a camping trip, which will be Hannah's first.
