Massarotti: Red Sox Need To Fire The Manager

BOSTON (CBS) -- Tony Massarotti doesn't wildly throw around calls for people in sports to lose their jobs. But the current Red Sox leave him little choice.

"I don't take this part of it lightly, I don't, to sit here and say that somebody should be fired," Mazz said after the most recent Red Sox loss in Tampa. "All I'm telling you is that you've got nowhere else to turn."

And so, Mazz concluded, the time has come for the Red Sox to fire John Farrell.

"This team needs to be slapped in the face right now," he said. "They're not getting it. They're not getting it! The season is starting to slide away -- they're not freaking getting it. You've got guys breaking off of second base for Christ's sake before the pitcher has even delivered the ball. You're getting your ass kicked by a bad team and it's happening over and over and over again. Bad bunting decisions, all this garbage.

"What direction do you have to go in other than to kick the team in the nuts and wake it up?"

While the Red Sox roster may not be fully stacked, the team is certainly much better than it has been playing in June.

"The team is in a spin, they are in an absolute, positive spin," Mazz said.

So, if he were Dave Dombrowski, what would he do?

"I fire the manager. I do.I fire the manager. Do it now, because this is slipping away. Don't wait," he said. "They set themselves up for this situation over the winter. They knew there was a possibility at some point they were going to have to do this. Fire the manager. Do it now, within the next 24 hours, so that Friday you come with a fresh start, and everybody's dialed back in. Do it now."
