Woman Stabbed In Random Attack On Esplanade; Suspect Arrested

BOSTON (CBS) - A woman was stabbed by a stranger while she was jogging alone Friday afternoon on the Esplanade. The victim, a 23-year-old from Allston, suffered lacerations to her head and other injuries.

State Police say 37-year-old Luis Olivo "suddenly and without provocation attacked the victim" with a pair of scissors on a footbridge between the Esplanade and the Lagoon.

After the stabbing, the suspect ran from police about five blocks. After a struggle, Olivo was tased and arrested at the corner of Dartmouth and Commonwealth Ave.

Evidence technicians recovered a pair of scissors from the patio at the restaurant Buttermilk & Bourbon. The restaurant's chef tells WBZ the suspect threw the scissors as he ran from police.

Walkers and runners on the Esplanade are relieved the man was caught. "It's just weird that it can happen in broad daylight," a woman said. "I think it's definitely really concerning as young women I mean you think avoid places at night, but in the middle of the day it can happen too."

Olivo faces several charges including armed assault with intent to murder, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail.
