Lifeguard Who Drowned During Fitness Test At Cape Cod Lake Identified

ORLEANS (CBS) – A man who drowned during a fitness test for lifeguards at Pilgrim Lake in Orleans Saturday morning has been identified as 22-year-old Jack Jakubek of Newburgh, New York.

Just before 9 a.m., returning lifeguards were taking part in the annual test. However, Jakubek did not resurface.

Orleans Fire chief Anthony Pike says the unconscious lifeguard was pulled from the pond and brought back to the shore by boat. Immediate resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Jakubek was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The cause of death is under investigation.
