Coast Guard Issues Warning To New England Boaters, Swimmers Ahead Of Hermine

BOSTON (CBS) – The United States Coast Guard is telling swimmers and boaters to be careful as Tropical Storm Hermine threatens to bring heavy rain and strong winds to New England for the Labor Day weekend.

Officials are particularly concerned about rough surf and strong rip currents impacting local beaches.

The Coast Guard says sailors should make sure their boats are secure and to avoid unnecessary trips out to sea if the weather gets stormy. Boaters should also make sure there's enough life jackets on board, and file a float plan with someone on land.

As for swimmers, they should check their local beach forecast for riptides. Paddle craft users are urged to carry ID and check their safety equipment.
