Dry For Now, Chance For Snow This Weekend

Winter seems to have settled in as we celebrate the new year.  Although, there will be a brief boost in temps as our next system moves in this weekend.

We had a cold morning with low temperatures in the teens and lower 20s.  The cold temps will stick around for at least a few more days.  Highs top off in the low to mid 30s today, Friday, and Saturday.

Changes start rolling in for Saturday evening as the clouds increase first.  Saturday night is when we will start to see snow showers in New England.  The system will move in from the southwest, reaching Connecticut, Rhode Island and Cape Cod first.  Snow showers lift to the north into Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire & Vermont after midnight and that's when a transition begins to the south.

Here is the breakdown by location:

Connecticut, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, SE MA: Prior to midnight, the snow showers fall and accumulate to a coating to 1".  As temps rise to the 50s and lower 60s (maybe), the snow will be washed away by rain Sunday morning.  Heavy rain is possible-1" to 2" through Sunday.

Boston, South, West & Central Massachusetts: Snow showers accumulate up to a few inches.  After midnight there is a brief period of icing before it changes to all rain as temps rise to the upper 40s and lower 50s by Sunday morning.

Berkshires, Southern Vermont & Southern New Hampshire: Temps will stay colder longer (plus the elevation is higher) so as the system moves north Sunday morning, expecting higher snow totals, then a change to ice and then to rain late Sunday morning.

Green & White Mountains: Fresh snow Sunday morning! Although, there is a brief chance for icing Sunday afternoon as temps rise to around the freezing mark.

Here is the map for a visual:

There is still some uncertainty with what track the system will take and that will greatly affect totals and type of precipitation.  We will continue to keep you updated on this system.

Happy New Year!
