Daily Talker: Girl Kept Out Of School For Shaving Head

A 9-year-old student in Colorado who shaved her head to support her friend during a battle with cancer will be allowed to go back to school.

The Caprock Academy school board in Grand Junction, Colorado voted 3-1 to let Kamryn Renfro return to class without a week, despite breaking the public charter school's strict dress code. Board members said administrators were correct to not let her go to class until they were able to vote on a personal exception for her.

"We're a classical education school. We would expect our students to engage in critical thinking, and sometimes that's going to be challenging us," said president of Caprock Academy Catherine Norton Breman.

But Bill Newcomer, the one board member who voted against the exception, said, "It is the responsibility on behalf of the parents [and] on behalf of the school to monitor what the children do, and if they do something that's not approved, that there are consequences to that."

Kamryn's parents allowed her to shave her head, after a friend who is fighting neuroblastoma lost her hair because of chemotherapy.
