Boston police officer shot in Roxbury

A Boston police officer was shot in the arm and a suspect was wounded during a chase in Roxbury early Friday, the commissioner said.

Police said officers spotted a "group of suspicious individuals" in the park at Dudley and Washington Streets around 12:45 a.m. When they approached the group, investigators said one man, later identified as 31-year-old Daiquan Rice, ran away. They chased him to Kenilworth Street and that's when, according to police, Rice shot at them.

"As officers turned the corner, they were fired upon by this individual. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times in the lower extremities. One police officer was struck in the arm. It appears to be non-life-threatening," Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox told reporters. "We're very, very lucky and fortunate that there was no loss of life today."

The officer and Rice were taken to separate hospitals, according to Boston Police Sergeant Detective John Boyle. Cox said police recovered a "high capacity firearm" with an extended magazine from the suspect.

Officers also said they recovered two plastic bags containing a "white, rock-like substance" that fell from Rice's pocket.

The officer has not been identified. Rice is under arrest at the hospital and has "non-life-threatening" injuries, Boyle said. Rice faces several charges including attempted murder, possession of Class B drugs and carrying a firearm without a license.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said she met with the wounded officer in the hospital and that the officer was "doing alright."

"It's just not ok for violence to be happening anywhere in the city of Boston, particularly as we continue to try to fight the flow of guns and firearms," the mayor said.

Three other officers also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at area hospitals, police said.

Rice was arraigned Monday via Zoom in Roxbury District Court.  He was ordered held without bail.
