PGPD Officer Facing Charges After Allegedly Hitting Toddler

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A Prince George's County Police officer has been indicted on child abuse charges after he allegedly hit a toddler, causing a concussion.

State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said in a news release Tuesday that 26-year-old Francesco Marlett was indicted on charges of child abuse and assault.

Prosecutors say on Dec. 27, Marlett was watching his girlfriend's 3-year-old son while she was making dinner. Authorities say the boy soiled the bed and Marlett spanked him, causing the child to hit his head against the wall and lose consciousness.

Alsobrooks says the boy was treated for a concussion.

Police Chief Hank Stawinski said in a news release that Marlett was suspended with pay immediately after the incident. Stawinski says Marlett, a 3-year veteran with the department, is now suspended without pay.
