Maryland Weather: At Least 6 Rescued From Flash Flooding, More Than 15K Lose Power Following Severe Storms

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- More than 7,000 BGE customers in Maryland are without power Tuesday morning after severe storms rolled through the state Monday evening.

As of 9 a.m., 7,851 BGE customers are without power.

At 11 p.m., BGE reported a total of 12,610  customers without power, nearly 6,900 in Baltimore County alone. At one point, more than 15,000 customers were in the dark.

Nearly 2,900 customers in Baltimore and around 2,700 in Anne Arundel County were also without power Monday night.

The storms brought power lines crashing down and made for treacherous driving conditions.

"On Eastern Boulevard, there was a flood all the way past the wheel of the vehicle," Alisha Hemby said.

In Essex, WJZ captured video of a mixture of wind and lightning throughout the afternoon. At one point, hail fell from the sky.

"I thought (the hail) was going to break the window," Baltimore County resident Caiya Foster said.

The heavy rain made visibility tough for drivers and created the added danger of flooded roads in Baltimore County and beyond.

"I have a son in the car so that makes me even more nervous because I don't want anything to happen to either one of us," Foster said.

Some parts of the area saw rainfall rates of more than four inches per hour due to the slow-moving storms.

In Prince George's County, crews rescued a person from a van trapped in flash flooding near Suitland.

Five others were rescued from flash flooding in the 400 block of Old Ritchie Road.

The area is still not in the clear; flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings continue for parts of the state.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Prince George's County until 3 a.m. Tuesday and for southeastern Baltimore County until 1:30 a.m. Central Baltimore County is under a flash flood warning until 1:45 a.m.

Another flash flood warning including parts of Calvert, Charles, Prince George's and St. Mary's counties is in effect until 2:45 a.m.

The heatwave continues in Maryland with temperatures in the 90s. Monday's heat index will also reach 100.
