Maryland Celebrates First B1G Anniversary

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland marked the first anniversary of its entry into the Big Ten Conference Wednesday. The Terps boasted a successful inaugural campaign, racking up a league-high seven conference titles in the 2014-15 season.

"I am extremely proud of how we hit the ground running in our inaugural season in the Big Ten," director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. "The hard work and dedication by our coaches, student-athletes and staff helped us set a standard during our first season in one of the elite conferences in the nation. The support we received from our fans and the energy and excitement they brought to our venues was tremendous. We have built a solid foundation and have a lot to look forward in our second year in the Big Ten Conference."

Maryland racked up regular season and conference championships in both men's soccer and women's basketball while winning or sharing regular season crowns in field hockey, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse.

In addition to the aforementioned Big Ten Conference success, the Terps continued to thrive nationally as well. The women's lacrosse team hoisted the national championship trophy for a second consecutive season and an unprecedented 13th time while the men's program advanced all the way to the national title game. The women's basketball team advanced to the Final Four for a second straight season for the first time in program history. Men's basketball went dancing for the first time since 2010 and won a school-record 26 games during the regular season. Men's soccer and field hockey continued their lengthy tradition of trips to the NCAA Tournament and the football team went 5-1 on the road with wins over traditional football powers Penn State and Michigan while punching its ticket to a bowl game for a second consecutive season. Maryland baseball took down top seed UCLA while marching on to a second straight NCAA Super Regionals.

In the first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference, football season ticket sales increased 25 percent from 2013 and 35 percent from 2012 and experienced a 14 percent increase in attendance figures, the second-largest increase among Power Five schools. The Terrapin Club Scholarship Fund welcomed over 900 brand new donors while an additional 1,100 donors increased their contributions over prior years. Throughout the year our alumni, parents and friends made commitments totaling approximately $40 million to support Maryland Athletics.
