Fire At Boys' Treatment Facility Under Investigation

LAUREL, Md. (AP) -- Officials are investigating a fire in vacant buildings near a secure residential treatment facility for boys in Laurel, Maryland.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said in a news release Monday that security guards at the New Beginnings Youth Development Center reported a fire in the area on Friday night. When firefighters arrived, they found one 2 1/2-story vacant building totally involved in fire and fire in several rooms of a second building.

County fire officials say it took about an hour to control the blaze in the vacant structures on the old Forest Haven Asylum property. No injuries were reported.

The D.C. fire department is investigating the blaze because the property is under the District's government's jurisdiction, but a fire department official didn't immediately return a request for comment.
