Family Of Woman Who Killed Self In Jail Sues Baltimore Co.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The parents of a woman who took her life while at the Baltimore County Detention Center have filed a $15 million wrongful death lawsuit, saying staffers failed to provide their daughter with necessary treatment for her bipolar disorder.

The Daily Record of Baltimore reports that, according to the lawsuit, 27-year-old Ashleigh Gelin was crying, screaming and complaining of hearing other inmates yelling her name when she was at the jail in November 2013. The suit says that although staffers were aware of her mental health history, Gelin never received a screening and wasn't placed on special observation status.

A correctional officer found her with a sheet around her neck that had been tied to a ceiling vent.

Baltimore County spokeswoman Ellen Kobler declined to comment.
