Elkridge Bakery Wins Cooking Channel Competition

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Howard County bakery is celebrating today, after winning a major competition on the Cooking Channel.

It's a sweet day indeed for Kupcakes & Co. in Elkridge, which churns out about 10,000 cupcakes per week, WJZ's Ron Matz reports.

But it was a seven-layer wedding cake, made for a Virginia couple, that has the bakery in the national spotlight on a show called Cake Hunters.

When she announced the news to her 22 employees, "they were freaking out and crying, screaming and jumping up and down," said Michelle Kupiec, the shop's owner.

"It was pretty incredible. A very memorable time in our lives."

The masterpiece was a marriage of the shop's cookie dough and half baked chocolate brownie flavors, molded into a "seven-tiered, phenomenal, drop dead gorgeous cake."

"We spent many late, late hours here with Michelle," according to decorator Faith Frazier. "We partied a little bit but we had to make it fun. It was about a week-long process."

"A lot went into it," Kupiec added. "A lot of passion, a lot of excitement. We got a lot of information about the couple and we kind of just went from there, their interests and what they liked."

Kupiec says the shop has been in business for five years, and has 110 flavors of cupcakes and cakes. The staff has baked for more than 400 weddings. She plans to open a second location in Clarksville in January.
