Correctional Officers Indicted In Inmate Assault Case
TOWSON (WJZ) -- Three current and one former correctional officer in Baltimore were indicted Thursday by a Baltimore City grand jury in two assaults involving five inmates.
According to the indictment, an officer at the Maryland Reception, Diagnostics and Classification (MRDCC) center was assaulted on Sept. 29, 2013. The next morning, three other officers allegedly assaulted five inmates they believed were responsible for the first officer's injuries.
Those officers were charged with assault and conspiracy, while the inmates were also charged in the Sept. 29 assault of an officer.
The second incident occurred months later at the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center (BCBIC) with a correctional lieutenant and sergeant, both involved in the first assault. These two officers were put on administrative leave with pay immediately after the second assault occurred.
"Our Internal Investigative detectives were on this case immediately, and made sure to bring in (City Correctional Investigative Unit) and the State's Attorney's Office right away," said DPSCS Secretary Gregg L. Hershberger. "We expect all of our officers to conduct themselves honorably and with integrity. Those that do not will be held accountable."
