A backpack is essential to store supplies if you have to leave your house in a hurry. Items should include: A radio, bottled water, hygiene items, toilet paper, can opener, gloves, and a first aid kit.
Utilities often go out, so make sure you have non-perishable food that you don't have to cook - canned food and a can opener. Although eating cold Spaghettios isn't that appetizing, it could save your life!
"How much should you have in your backpack - a day's worth, two day's worth?"
Sam Kille of the American Red Cross says it's best to plan for three days, especially as a storm approaches. He also adds that a rule of thumb is gallon of water per person per day - maybe more - depending on medical needs.
When preparing for a natural disaster it's all about having an escape plan.
"You need to know who your local emergency manager is, what the evacuation plan and route will be, where would the shelter be if you have to leave. Think about having a friend's house you can stay," says Sam Kille of the American Red Cross.
