Zoo Introduces A Very Tall Baby

Friday was the first day outside for a female giraffe born six months ago at the Columbus Zoo. Plenty of folks were on hand to see the baby girl, named Rukia.

Giraffes are born standing, with an average height of six feet, and weighing between 100-150 pounds at birth. Baby giraffes can grow up to an inch a day and double their height in the first year. The average height of adult giraffes is 15-18 feet tall and they weigh as much as 4,000 pounds.

Giraffes have no trouble breeding in captivity, and their population is not in danger, experts say.

Giraffes are native throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and adult giraffes have no natural predators, except for man.
