Zack Galifianakis, "Hangover" Star, Smoked Fake Joint on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher"

The Hangover Actor Zach Galifianakis Smokes a Joint on "Real Time with Bill Maher"

NEW YORK (CBS) The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis, better known as kooky brother-in-law "Alan," appeared to smoke a joint on Bill Maher's HBO show Friday, but now both Maher and his agent are saying that the comedian didn't light up a real one.

Maher told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Monday that if it had been a real joint, "I would have smoked it...I think it was cloves or something."

The gossip site RumorFix also reports that Maher's publicist described the joint as just a "prop."

When the subject on "Real Time with Bill Maher" turned to California's Proposition 19, which would make marijuana legal in the state of California, Galifianakis agreed that the law was "tricky politically" because some people still view pot use as taboo.

The actor, who was promoting his new movie Due Date, handed over the reins of the discussion to another guest, shifted in his chair, reached into his pocket, pulled out the "joint" and lit it.

Conservative Republican Margaret Hoover, who also appeared as a guest, could not stop laughing as she took a whiff, but not a puff, and announced..."It's real."

Hoover, it seems, is not overly familiar with marijuana - which is not particularly surprising.

The discussion continued, but was interrupted by Galifianakis who teasingly yelled, "Oh my God! Look at those Dragons!"

Unfortunately for Galifianakis and other supporters of Proposition 19, the highly controversial bill is expected to go down in flames Tuesday.
