WORCESTER, Massachusetts (CBS/AP) Police in Worcester, Massachusetts, are trying to figure out who killed an expectant mother, removed a fetus from her womb and dumped her body in a closet. The fetus is missing.

Authorities say 23-year-old Darlene Haynes was about eight months pregnant and the fetus could survive, but would need immediate medical attention.

Haynes' body was found Monday by her landlord, who was checking on a strong odor coming from the apartment. Police say the body was found wrapped in bedding in a closet and that the victim had apparently been dead for several days.

Police say the death was ruled a homicide, but the exact cause of death had not been determined. An autopsy shows her fetus was removed.

Officials say Haynes also has a 1-year-old daughter who is safe with relatives. Worcester police are searching for the fetus, according to the Boston Herald.
