PHOENIX (CBS/KPHO/AP) The Westboro Baptist Church announced that it will picket the funeral services for the victims of the Arizona shooting that left six dead.

Now, Arizona legislators are attempting to thwart the controversy-courting group.

Lawmakers are drafting emergency legislation for consideration by the full Legislature on Tuesday to prohibit protests at or near funeral sites.

The Topeka, Kan. church said it plans to picket the funeral Thursday for 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green. The church posted a flier on its website, which reads in part:

THANK GOD FOR THE SHOOTER-6 DEAD! WBC WILL PICKET THEIR FUNERALS!

The fundamentalist church has picketed many military funerals to draw attention to their view that the deaths are God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

Arizona lawmakers are denouncing the church's plan to protest. They're modeling their legislation on an Ohio law that has been upheld in court.
