War On Terror Not Working

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchorHarry Smith.

Help me out on this: The United States is engaged in a war on terror?

Right.

And how long has it been? Six years almost... al Qaeda came to the United States and made September 11th the new day of infamy. Yet, according to The Washington Post, al Qaeda has significantly built itself and established a safe haven in the tribal areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

When they make one of their frequent Internet appearances, Ayman al-Zawahri looks like he's working from a glossy TV news set. If all that isn't disturbing enough, then I suggest you take a look at today's New York Times. Investigators from the GAO, the people who look into how the government spends tour money, set up a phone company and easily duped the Nuclear Regulatory Commission into granting them a license which would allow them to buy materials for a dirty bomb. Even I can connect these dots.

This war on terror ain't going so good.
