PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (CBS/KIRO) Detectives in Washington state are investigating why a man ran from deputies and then opened fire in a Walmart parking lot Sunday, causing a shootout that left both him and a young woman dead and two officers wounded.

Sunday's violence occurred around 3:45 p.m. after deputies received several calls about a suspicious man walking around with a gun in Port Orchard, Washington, said sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson according to CBS affiliate KIRO.

Police say that two deputies located the man and tried to talk to him, but he began running with officers in pursuit.

"For reasons not yet known, the suspect turned and fired multiple shots," said Wilson.

According to Wilson, a third, female deputy then shot and killed the gunman who appeared to be in his 20s.

The two deputies were shot in the torso and are listed in satisfactory condition at a Tacoma hospital, reports KIRO.

A young woman believed to be in her teens was also shot and killed. The release said based on witness statements and other evidence, investigators believe that the gunman and the young woman were together and knew each other, but their exact relationship is not yet known. It is also unclear how the woman was struck by gunfire, the release said.

The store was immediately locked down. Customers in the store were allowed to leave after investigators questioned them, Wilson said.

Walmart later issued a statement that read, "This is a tragic incident. We stand ready to assist police with their investigation."

So far, no names have been released in the investigation.
