Wally, the returning dead whale, finally laid to rest in California

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A dead humpback whale that kept floating up near Southern California beaches has finally been laid to rest.

The Los Angeles Times said the rotting carcass of a 45-foot-long female named Wally was cut up on an Encinitas beach on Monday and trucked to a San Diego landfill.

The body of the 15-year-old female was towed about a half-dozen times since it first washed ashore at Dockweiler State Beach in Los Angeles County on June 30.

The cause of death for the 22-ton humpback has not been determined, but parasites were found in its intestines, CBS Los Angeles affiliate KCBS reported.

Currents kept pushing Wally south. It was repeatedly towed out to sea after showing up off several Orange County beaches and finally came ashore over the weekend at Grandview Beach in Encinitas.
