Vote for "Mugshot of the Day" online, brainchild of Sheriff Joe Arpaio

(CBS/AP) PHOENIX - Joe Arpaio has made a name for himself by being the self-styled "toughest sheriff in America" and running with it.

Now, the Maricopa County lawman known for dressing inmates in pink underwear and feeding them green baloney is inviting people to go online and pick their favorite mugshots on the county jail's website.

Really.

Arpaio wants users to browse through the photos and vote for "Mugshot of the Day."

The top picks so far aren't unexpected: They're the most disheveled, unusual looking people among those booked into the downtown Phoenix jail.

Is there a method to this mugshot madness?

Arpaio says he hopes the increased Web traffic will highlight the work of his employees. He also says more crimes may be uncovered if the public can view the photos.
