Video appears to show Florida cop striking handcuffed woman
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville sheriff's officer has been fired and arrested after video surfaced appearing to show him striking and kicking a woman who was in handcuffs, reports CBS affiliate WJAX.
The former officer, Akinyemi Borisade, had only been on the force for about 13 months, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. He now faces a battery charge in connection with the incident, which occurred at the county jail.
Officials said Mayra Martinez was brought to the jail drunk after resisting arrest following an incident at the Scores Bar in Jacksonville on Wednesday.
The video showed Martinez, who was handcuffed, appearing to be pushed against a wall by Borisade. The woman then appears to kicks him twice, and he can be seen appearing to punch her multiple times in return, before another officer walks over.
Martinez was charged with trespassing and resisting an officer with violence.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Pat Ivey called Borosade's behavior unacceptable during a Thursday press conference.
"She's handcuffed, there are ways this could have been handled without striking her," Ivey said.
Action News Jax asked JSO why the other officers didn't stop Borasade and if they could be reprimanded. JSO said since one of the officers intervened, there always no need for the others too and therefore no reprimand.
Borisade is a probationary officer, which means he cannot appeal his firing. He can ask for what is known as a "name-clearing hearing" with the sheriff's office, which could allow him to regain the opportunity to work as an officer with another agency.
