Venice Boardwalk Rampage Update: Nathan Louis Campbell, Colo. man, charged with murder in fatal crash

(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - A transient from Colorado has been charged with murder and assault for allegedly driving his Dodge Avenger down the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles, killing an Italian tourist and injuring 16 other people.

If convicted, Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, faces up to life in prison.

Prosecutors Tuesday said Campbell maneuvered around a vehicle barrier early Saturday evening and plowed into tourists and vendors, killing 32-year-old Alice Gruppioni, who was on her honeymoon.

He is charged with murder and 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and 17 counts of hit-and-run. He was arrested Saturday night after turning himself in to authorities.

According to CBS Los Angeles, Campbell has an arrest record dating back to 2002 that includes offenses in four different states. He is being held on $1 million bail.
