US: Any Violence By Egypt's Government Must Stop

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is warning Egypt's government that if it is instigating any of the violence erupting on the streets of Cairo, it must halt immediately.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says the world is watching what is happening in Egypt's capital, where thousands of supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak battled Wednesday.

Gibbs also says the Obama administration will consider the Egyptian government's actions in reviewing decisions about $1.5 billion in U.S. aid to Egypt.

Mubarak announced Tuesday night that he would not seek office again, but would stay in power until elections can be held in September.

Gibbs says an orderly transition must begin immediately, and that transition must include opposition voices.
