Umbrella caused Rochester Institute of Technogy campus lockdown, says sheriff

(CBS/WROC) ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A gun scare on the Rochester Institute of Technology campus is over, with the sheriff's office saying an umbrella had been mistaken for a rifle.

According to WROC, sheriff's office gave the all clear at around 9:15 a.m. Friday.

Earlier in the morning, the campus was placed on lockdown, and RIT sent out email and text message alerts telling students and staff there was a possible gunman on campus. 

CBS affiliate WROC reports the alert read as follows: "Person allegedly with rifle spotted outside Kate Gleason residence hall. Shelter in place. People in the area of the residence halls are advised to stay inside until further notice."

The situation started around 8:20am. A campus bus driver reported seeing a man with a rifle in a bag.
