Two University of Maryland students dead in apparent murder-suicide shooting off-campus

(CBS/AP) COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Police say a University of Maryland student shot two roommates, one fatally, in an off-campus residence and then killed himself.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. Tuesday in College Park in Prince George's County.

Police did not release the names of any of the students involved in the shooting, but all three were male.

Police say one of the men set a fire in the basement of the home early Tuesday, and when his housemates confronted him he shot them. The injured student is expected to survive.

According to CBS Baltimore, police say the surviving student was shot attempting to run from the gunman.

Investigators say the weapon used in the crime was recovered and that they are not searching for any more suspects, CBS affiliate WUSA reports.

University of Maryland President Wallace Loh expressed grief and shock in a statement Tuesday, CBS Baltimore reports.

"The University of Maryland community awoke this morning to heartbreak. We are all shocked and saddened by this morning's tragic events. We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to the families and friends of the victims," Loh said in the statement.

University police are reportedly assisting local authorities in the investigation.
