Two dead, three wounded in Georgia shooting rampage

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Northwest Georgia authorities are investigating a violent rampage that left two people dead and three wounded on Tuesday.

They say a gunman shot multiple victims at one house, crashed a car into another house and shot the occupant, committed a carjacking, crashed the stolen vehicle and shot himself in the head on Tuesday afternoon in Cartersville, Ga.

Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap said three people were shot at the first house and one was pronounced dead on the scene. Millsap says the gunman fled and crashed a car into a house a couple of miles away, where he kicked in the door and shot an occupant in the hand.

Millsap said the shooter then carjacked an elderly man and his grandson and crashed their vehicle into a truck. The sheriff said the impact caused a fire and police found the gunman dead in the car of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"This is something we don't ever want to see," said Millsap, according to CBS affiliate WGCL. "You never expect things like this.... But it is happening everywhere."

The son of one of the shooting victims at the first house told the station his father was there doing some construction for the homeowner. The victim reportedly went into surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital overnight. However, the son said the damage had already been done, as the bullet shattered his father's spine and left him paralyzed. He is expected to have another surgery Wednesday.

WGCL reports the other two survivors' conditions are unknown.

Investigators are looking for a motive in the shootings.
