Turning Heads At The Emmys

Beaded, clingy and sexy shared the red carpet with simple elegance at the Emmy Awards, and the traditional black dress appeared to be a thing of the past.

Bright colors, especially red and yellow, were the real winners Sunday at Hollywood's second-biggest opportunity to flaunt designer duds.

If Oscar night is "the world's largest fashion show as they say it is - and I suspect they're right - the Emmys is No. 2," said New York-based fashion columnist Marylou Luther.

Helen Mirren

Metallic beaded and sequined dresses were standouts, as were sleek, body-hugging gowns with bare arms and cutout backs. "It's the millennium luster," said Tom Julian, trend analyst for Fallon McElligott Advertising.

Helen Hunt, Julia Roberts and Michelle Pfeiffer chose black gowns. But the styles were updated with sleek architectural lines, peekaboo fabrics or other embellishments.

For several designers, the Emmys were just the start of a busy fashion week.

John Lithgow

The design team Badgley Mischka, who dressed Emmy winner Helen Mirren and Christine Lahti, formerly of Chicago Hope, was putting the finishing touches on its Monday night show in New York. Randolph Duke, who dressed Emmy winner Kristen Johnston of 3rd Rock From the Sun, was scheduled to show his collection on Friday.

They are among more than 100 designers presenting their spring 2000 collections during women's Fashion Week. It was certain the attention they received on Emmy night would have the fashion faithful clamoring for front-row seats.

Calista Flockhart, David Kelley and Dylan McDermott

Duke dressed Jennifer Aniston of Friends, Debra Messing of Will and Grace, Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond, Jane Leeves of Frasier and Lorraine Braco of The Sopranos.

Messing was outfitted in a strapless ivory organza gown with a fitted bodice. Duke called it his "high society Y2K" dress. Aniston wore a stunning paisley beaded bronze gown. And Heaton's outfit was among the more distinctive of the evening: a white silk shantung embroidered coat and skirt.

Edie Falco

Tracey Ullman was unusually glamorous in a magenta beaded Chanel dress. Other actresses wearing sparkling gowns: Lisa Kudrow of Friends and Edie Falco of iThe Sopranos, both dressed in Pamela Dennis. Falco accepted her Emmy in a slate blue tank top with matching skirt.

Dennis said slate blue is "the" color of the 21st century. "It's modern and hip, but it's a classy color that won't go out of style," she said.

Julianna Margulies of ER wore a burgundy stretch satin corset gown designed by Dolce & Gabbana. Kim Delaney of NYPD Blue and Christina Applegate of Jesse both wore red dresses by Richard Tyler.

Dennis Franz

Yellow was the choice of Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City, who wore a V-neck dress with a web of sequins. Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal paired a yellow floor-length skirt with a white blouse.

Camryn Manheim of The Practice said she was so thrilled with her strapless ivory gown and shawl that she waited for just the right moment to unveil it. "It was made for me for the Golden Globes, but I loved it so much and it was so special, I wanted to save it for the Emmys."
