Three arrested in break-in death of fellow college athlete

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Police arrested three Faulkner University student-athletes in the death of 19-year-old Ryan Brooks, who was also an athlete at the school, reports CBS affiliate WSHM.

Marshall Wall, Ronnie Williams and Tabias Russell, are all charged with murder. The three 19-year-olds were taken into custody Thursday.

Police say all three suspects, as well as the victim, were attempting to break into a home to commit robbery at around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday. While in the process of committing the robbery, police say Brooks was shot by the homeowner in self-defense.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by responding medics.

According to Alabama state law, Wall, Williams and Russell can be charged with murder, despite not being the ones who pulled the trigger, because Brooks was killed during the commission of a robbery attempt in which they are suspects.

According to the Faulkner University athletics website, Wall is on the soccer team, and Williams and Russell are on the junior varsity football team roster. Brooks was also on the football team.

Brooks' mother, Misty Brooks, expressed shock at the alleged circumstances surround her son's death.

"This is not my son's character. I don't know how he got mixed up in this," the visibly upset mother explained.
