Third-grade teacher accused of heroin possession at Utah school

(CBS) SYRACUSE, Utah - Claudia Reaney, a third-grade teacher at a Davis County school in Utah, is facing an enhanced drug possession charge for allegedly having heroin residue in her classroom and in her car near the elementary school where she worked, CBS affiliate KUTV reports.

Following a tip, Syracuse Police questioned Reaney, 49, on Jan. 31 at Buffalo Point Elementary, where she taught. Upon a search of her car and classroom, police reportedly found evidence of heroin use, according to KUTV.

"We called one of the K-9 units out. We did a sniff on her vehicle. The K-9 gave a positive indication that, you know, drugs were or at least had been in the vehicle," Syracuse Police Chief Garret Atkin said.

According to KUTV, Atkins says the children could have come into contact with the drugs because police found drug residue inside the classroom as well as pieces of balloons, tin foil and straws.

Reaney was booked into the Davis County Jail on an enhanced charge of possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone. She could face more charges, Atkin said.

Reaney has been teaching in the Davis School District since 2007. She is now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of her criminal case, KUTV reports.
