(CBS News) A new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" has arrived online.

Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as a man who creates his own religion following the end of World War II, and Joaquin Phoenix as a soldier who becomes his right-hand man as the faith gains a following.

In the trailer, which clocks in at just over a minute long, Phoenix is seen banging on a windowsill, the rhythm setting an ominous tone for the rest of the clip.

"Man is not an animal. We are not a part of the animal kingdom," Hoffman's character, Lancaster Dodd, tells his followers.

Amy Adams, who plays Dodd's wife, is also heard saying, "The only way to defend ourselves is to attack."

"The Master" will be screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival, which begins Wednesday, and will open in theaters on Sept. 14.
