Texas town erects "selfie statue"
SUGAR LAND, Texas -- A Texas town has taken "selfies" to the next level.
The City of Sugar Land unveiled a "selfie statue" outside of its city hall, and many heads are turning, CBS affiliate KHOU reported.
The statue features two young girls snapping a selfie on a mobile phone.
It's part of a 10-piece collection donated by Sandy Levin, a Sugar Land resident, according to the city's web page. The selfie statue was installed along with a statue of a man playing guitar, a project valued at $32,500, KHOU reported.
Plans for the sculpture have been in the works since at least 2014, according to a city parks and recreation agenda from the spring of that year asking the city council to review the statue proposal.
As KHOU points out, the city is facing some criticism on social media.
While others seemed to be enjoying the new statue, and all the selfie possibilities.
The project was part of the city council's mission of "Building Community: Diverse Cultures, Leisure, Arts," KHOU reported.
