Sunday Almanac

CBS News Sunday Morning Anchor Charles Osgood remembers the arrival of George Scott Railton in America.

On March 10, 1880, George Scott Railton and six "lassies" knelt in Battery Park to give thanks for their safe arrival in the United States. On orders from William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, their arrival in the marked the official beginning of the Salvation Army in the United States.

Almost exactly six months to the day of the destruction of the World Trade Center, the Salvation Army's mission has never been more relevant.
