St. Louis teen charged in death during hoverboard robbery
ST. LOUIS -- An 18-year-old has been charged with murder after he allegedly tried to rob a man of his hoverboard, causing an incident in which gunfire was exchanged and his friend ended up dead, reports CBS affiliate KMOV.
According to police, Ronald Houston Jr. was riding in the passenger seat of a car being driven by 19-year-old Dominick Chambly when Houston reportedly saw an unknown man on the sidewalk with a hoverboard and announced he was going to steal it. According to court documents, he then pulled a ski mask over his face and exited the vehicle with a handgun.
After he stole the hoverboard from the man, the station reported that Houston allegedly reentered the car, at which point the robbery victim drew a gun of his own and began firing at the vehicle Houston rode in as it drove away.
The shots struck Chambly, who eventually crashed. There were three passengers in the back seat of Chambly's car when the deadly incident transpired, according to the station, but only two people were found at the scene of the crash: Chambly, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and Houston, who had been shot in the back.
Houston was taken to the hospital and remained in stable condition. He was later charged with four felonies in connection with the incident. He is charged with first degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action, and also with the second-degree murder of his friend, Chambly.
When someone dies as a result of suspect perpetrating, attempting to perpetrate or fleeing the perpetration of a felony, the suspect can be charged with murder, according to court documents. Houston was on probation for a unlawful use of a weapon at the time of the fatal shooting, according to the station.
