Sorority activities at Duke suspended over alcohol abuse

DURHAM, N.C. -- Sorority activities at Duke University have been suspended after a female student's alcohol-related hospitalization.

Larry Moneta, Duke's vice president for student affairs, released a statement Wednesday that the suspension comes after the hospitalization and other concerns about the new member recruitment process.

Moneta said the student is expected to recover fully.

He said university staff is meeting with the sororities to review policies on alcohol, social events and recruitment.

WTVD reports that an email sent to sororities regarding the suspension on Wednesday says the new sorority member was hospitalized in critical condition overnight. The email was signed by a Duke official and an officer with a campus association made up of sororities.
