Son Of Bud

A son of Rep. Bud Shuster said Tuesday that he wants to run for the seat his father will leave on Jan. 31.

Bill Shuster, 40, a Chrysler dealer, said he has "in-depth knowledge of Congress and personal relationships with numerous people in the Bush administration."

Bud Shuster announced he would resign the seat he has held since 1973 because House rules bar his continued chairmanship of the Transportation Committee and because of his wife's failing health.

The announcement came three months after the House ethics committee cited him for "serious official misconduct" for accepting improper gifts, favoring a lobbyist and misusing congressional staff for political work. Shuster has dismissed the committee action as "overkill."

Bud Shuster represents the 9th District in south-central and western Pennsylvania, including Bedford and Altoona.

Gov. Tom Ridge must schedule a special election for the seat within 60 days of Bud Shuster's resignation.

Republican and Democratic state leaders have not yet picked their candidates.

In 1996, Bill Shuster's brother Robert unsuccessfully ran for a House seat in a district adjoining their father's.
