Soccer star explains jeers: I'm "rich, handsome"

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has a theory about why opposing fans jeer him.

"I am handsome, rich and a great player and people are jealous of me," the Portugal forward proclaimed. "I don't have any other explanation."

Hmm, ok. Tell us what you really think, Ronaldo.

Athletes boasting about their skills, looks and bank accounts isn't exactly earth-shattering news but Ronaldo scores the trifecta in one sound bite - a rarity even among the cockiest sports stars.

Ronaldo's comments came after Dinamo Zagreb's fans targeted him with heckles and whistles during Madrid's 1-0 win in its Champions League opener on Wednesday.

After the game, the bloodied soccer star also claimed that referees turn a blind eye when opponents illegally rough him up.

"I don't understand anything," he said. "Some players can't be touched while I receive a beating."

Call us crazy but maybe his absurd level of arrogance is why he receives such a beating - on and off the field.

Of course, if you believe in sports lists, Ronaldo's claims may not be off-base. He is not an ugly man, is worth $160 million and is regarded as one of the top players in the world - perhaps only behind Lionel Messi.

But earlier this year he got the best of Messi, scoring the winning goal (after Messi lost the ball) in the Copa Del Rey final (see video below).

Ok, so maybe Ronaldo is right after all.
