Sherri Williams, Ala. woman, fatally shot while holding her newborn baby, report says

(CBS/AP) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A 24-year-old Alabama woman was shot and killed while standing in her doorway on Monday while holding her 10-day-old baby, police said.

The child was reportedly unhurt.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said the victim, identified as Sherri Williams, was holding her baby and standing in the doorway of her apartment in the Gate City neighborhood when shots rang out Monday afternoon. Two men got into an altercation at a nearby store, and one of the men chased the other and fired a gun while running, officials said.

Authorities said Williams was hit with a bullet in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.

Williams told the The Birmingham News the victim fell on a couch by the door with her child still in her arms.

Birmingham police have not made any arrests in the shooting. 

Authorities are now looking for a black man in a white tank top and a black woman in a yellow shirt who is missing some braids. The two were last seen in a black Chrysler Sebring.
