Sheriff's "In Dog We Trust" rug sells for $9,650 at auction

LARGO, Fla. - A rug at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office that was mistakenly imprinted with the words "In Dog We Trust" has sold for $9,650 in an online auction.

The green rug displaying a large sheriff's star was placed a few months ago in the lobby of Largo, Florida's new public safety complex, which houses the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

An employee first noticed the spelling error on the rug, which , of course, was supposed to read, "In God We Trust." The $500 rug was removed the following day.

On Jan. 15, the auction began with a starting bid of $100. In total, 83 bids were placed. The buyer's name was not available.

Auction proceeds will go to Canine Estates, a Palm Harbor nonprofit for injured and abandoned animals.
