Search for missing student Anjelica Hadsell leads police to human remains
FRANKLIN, Va. - Authorities in Virginia searching for missing 18-year-old Longwood University student Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell say they found human remains in Southampton County.
Norfolk police say the remains were discovered Thursday morning outside a shed at an abandoned residence south of Franklin, about 45 miles west of Norfolk where Hadsell was last seen. Local station WAVY reports a tip led police to the 34000 block of Smiths Ferry Road.
In a news release, police say the remains will be sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification and further analysis.
The FBI and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management also are involved in the search for Hadsell, who has been missing since March 2. She had reportedly been staying at her parents' home while on spring break.
According to CBS affiliate WTVR, police say Hadsell sent several unusual text messages to her parents before she disappeared. Her debit and credit cards were later found cut up.
During the course of the investigation the missing girl's father, Wesley Hadsell, was arrested and charged with obstructing justice, burglary and possession of ammunition by a felon.
The father's attorney said his client was trying to help find his missing daughter.
