(CBS) - As we all bask in the afterglow of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, it's time to take stock of what we saw.

Some of the images will quickly become iconic, and some scenes will stay in our collective memory for years to come.

No one knows this better than Getty photographer Chris Jackson, who was on the scene recording all the events of Friday's wedding. Jackson sat down with Erica Hill on "The Early Show on Saturday Morning" to talk about the many memorable scenes from that eventful day.

"What an incredible day," Jackson said. The veteran photographer was in Westminster Abby during the ceremony and one of the closest observers of the royal couple.

One of the best moments was as the newly-wed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge first walked out of the Abby doors.

"Weeks and months of planning have gone into this picture," Jackson told Erica. The photographer mapped out the area outside the Abby to find the perfect spot to set up shop. Knowing that he would only get one chance at recording Prince William and Kate step outdoors for the first time as a married couple.

"We had about thirty seconds to get this shot," Jackson described. "In the end it all sort of paid off."

When asked if part of capturing this images is based on luck, Jackson replied, "I think you make your own luck." The photographer then described the complex process of position equipment, watching for the right lighting, and, of course, being in the right place at the right time.
