Report: Boy, 5, loses eye after Detroit drive-by shooting

DETROIT -- A five-year-old boy is expected to survive but lost an eye after being shot during a drive-by shooting on Detroit's east side, the boy's grandfather told CBS Detroit.

The child was inside his home on Irvington Street when someone fired shots though the front window around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, reports the station. He was struck in the face by a bullet.

Police reportedly believe the crime was a random one. They are still searching for the gunman, who may have been targeting a different home.

"I was downstairs in the basement, I heard a gunshot and then I heard screaming. I came upstairs and my grandson was in my daughter's arm," Jerome Brazelton, the child's grandfather, told the station. "They were sitting in the house watching television, the kids were running around playing and the young fella took a bullet."

The boy was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

"His condition today is he lost an eye, but he pulled through the surgery," said Brazelton.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 313-596-1140 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
